Wise Owl are now running a new Introduction to MySQL course |
---|
We've been teaching SQL to advanced level for a long time now, but it's always been using Transact SQL (T-SQL), the Microsoft SQL Server dialect. If you have a MySQL database we can now teach you using your correct dialect and coding environment (let us know if you are interested in PostgreSQL, PL/SQL for Oracle or any other dialect). |
There are a number of different dialects of SQL that you can learn. Here are the main four:
Dialect | Use with | Notes |
---|---|---|
T-SQL | SQL Server | This MIcrosoft variant of standard SQL lets you create variables and run WHILE loops. |
PL/SQL | Oracle | Another variant of SQL, which allows you to create variables and define objects working with Oracle databases. |
PL/pgSQL | Postgres | This allows you to work with the open-source Postgres database (so named because it was a sequel to the original Ingres database). PL/pgSQL and PL/SQL are very similar. |
MySQL | MySQL | This dialect allows you to work with the free and open-source MySQL (although it's actually owned by Oracle!). |
Previously we've always trained only on the first one - SQL as it's written within SQL Server - but we are pleased to announce that we are now running courses in MySQL also.
You write MySQL within MySQL workbench. Any similarity between this and SQL Server Management Studio is surely intentional ...
Here's a simple MySQL query:
Still struggling to see the differences between T-SQL and MySQL? There aren't many!
We are amenable to the idea of adding the other two dialects of SQL to our course list (the different versions of SQL are very similar to each other). Let us know if you're a frustrated Postgres or Oracle database user who would love to book a Wise Owl SQL course, but can't!
