Sigh … you'll soon be able to create an avatar to attend a Teams meeting for you |
---|
Don't want people to see your face on screen, but still want to prove you're at a Teams meeting? You will soon (sadly) be able to get an avatar to represent you, even to the extent of reproducing your movements. |
It's a familiar quandary: you want to show you're there in person in a meeting, but you don't want people to see your face. The solution? Build an avatar to represent you!
The key thing about this is that the avatar will mimic your expressions: so if you throw up your arms in horror, for example, your avatar will - sort of - do the same.
Teams meeting will, alas, never be the same when this preview feature (it's called Microsoft Mesh) is released:
Spot the real people?
You'll be able to build your avatars through a menu like this one:
This menu comes from a preview video from Microsoft's Teams avatar announcement blog.
As things stand, you'll be able to build up to 3 avatars:
This reminds me so much of customising Nintendo miis!
The links between your movements and your avatar's may be a bit primitive to start with:
In this example, the avatar will raise their hand when you do - but will it really catch the nuance of a human gesture?
Please, we beg you: just keep your cameras on! You will get so much more out of any training course if we can see you (and not some poorly animated 2-dimensional substitute).
