July 2023 newsletter competition: results and answers |
---|
Congratulations to Denzil Foakes of Skanska for winning our second film title rebus competition, out of a field of 24 entries. Here are the answers to the riddles! |
In this blog
The two words most of the 21 people who entered this competition used most frequently were "fun" and "difficult"! In retrospect some of the questions were a little tricky. Here's a breakdown of how many questions people got right:
Congratulations to Catherine, Martin and Colin for getting all 15 questions right - even "Gladiator"!
This month's £50 Amazon voucher was won by Denzil Foakes of Skanska (a repeat winner, as it happens; he also won in October 2021), despite not being one of the 3 people to get all 15 questions correct, proving that probability works in mysterious ways (and that the Wise Owl sorting spreadsheet is scrupulously fair).
Here are the answers to the quiz - see how many you got right!
Most of these did prove to be fairly easy for most people:
No. | Question | Answer |
---|---|---|
1 | Harry Potter (that's a fairy, by the way - one of 3 images in the competition provided by Bing Image Creator). | |
2 | Top Gun (there are 3 buns, but the arrow is pointing to the top one). | |
3 | Blade Runner (that's 70s superstar band Slade and Mo Farah; Suzanne you don't get any bonus points for having gone to the same school as Noddy Holder I'm afraid). | |
4 | A Star is Born (the arrow is pointing to Bjorn of Abba). | |
5 | Ghostbusters (the image was created courtesy of Bing Image Creator: something like "Show me a cartoon of people dusting a ghost"). |
These may have meant to be middling questions, but the first one was actually the hardest one in the competition.
No. | Question | Answer |
---|---|---|
6 | Gladiator (or "Glad 'e ate 'er"). This was the question most people got wrong. A common wrong answer was Predator, although I don't think this works. In retrospect I don't think this was a fair question, and regret asking it! | |
7 | Indiana Jones (that's an outline of the state of Indiana and a picture of Tom Jones). Not an easy question! | |
8 | Twilight Saga (that's one of Roald's Dahl's Twits, a light and an Aga). | |
9 | The Greatest Showman (there are 5 snowman, but the arrow is pointing to the best one). | |
10 | Avengers (another computer generated image: "Show me a cartoon of scavengers", or something like that). |
Most people found at least some of these difficult!
No. | Question | Answer |
---|---|---|
11 | Oppenheimer - many people found this difficult, but I wasn't sure why. The film was in the news, it's clearly an op and a pen, and surely you can then guess that that's a heifer at the end?). | |
12 | A Few Good Men (many people put Goodfellas for this; I don't think this works as an answer, because the film would have to be called Mostly black and a few good fellas). | |
13 | Pirates of the Caribbean (by some way my favourite question: this clearly is people doing Pilates). | |
14 | One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest (I suspect many people guessed this - otherwise how many people could recognise that that's a Power Automate flow at the top of the picture?). | |
15 | Back to the Future - possibly the weakest question, as I had to add it at the last minute. That's the future tense of the first conjugation of Latin verbs on the right. |
Thanks to everyone for entering! It's quite fun setting these, so maybe I'll include a Christmas film rebus in our December newsletter. In the meantime, watch out for the occasional prize competitions which may pop up from time to time.
