The winner of our New Year's quiz, and some analysis of the scores |
---|
Congratulations to Paul M of Rochdale Borough Council for winning our New Year quiz (and a £50 voucher). This blog shows which questions were the easiest and hardest, and gives some background information and analysis. |
Congratulation to Paul M of Rochdale Council for winning the £50 voucher from our New Year themed quiz (Paul's was the answer randomly chosen by our electronic sorting hat out of 42 submitted entries, weighted according to how many answers each person got correct). However your chances were improved if you waited about 24 hours to do the quiz, as I was able to correct a couple of answers: I spelt Robert Burns as Robert Bruce, and didn't realise that Croatia had recenlty adopted the Euro. Apologies for these oversights.
Congratulations also to Gary B of Southend Council for impressively getting every single question right, and to Linda W for getting only one wrong. Given the difficulty of the questions, this is pretty impressive!
Here were the questions most people struggled with:
Question | Answer | Number right |
---|---|---|
4 - Frankenstein facts | Among 4 plausible sounding facts, the claim that Mary Shelley (the author of Frankenstein) got the idea in a dream was the most plausible one - but sadly it was also the only one which was wrong. | 14 out of 42 |
6 - Nick Hornby's brother-in-law | Nick Hornby's sister Gill is married to Robert Harris, the famous author. | 19 out of 42 |
7 - U2's New Year's Day single | I was amazed to learn that this was based on events in Poland to do with the Solidarity Union, and is nothing to do with the Troubles in Northern Ireland | 18 out of 42 |
13 - Fidel Castro assassination methods | This was almost impossible: particularly as one of the answers (getting Castro to wear a diving suit infected with tuberculosis) sounded so implausible, but was true. The only way listed that the CIA didn't try to assassinate Castro was by sending him a Spanish translation of Das Kapital infected with anthrax. | 14 out of 42 |
17 - Concorde (or was it?) | The first supersonic flight in history was made on New Year's Eve 1968, but it turns out that this was made by the Tupolev Tu-144, and not Concorde. Who knew? Certainly not me until I compiled this quiz! To be fair, I did include a photo ... | 11 out of 42 |
The question that most people got right by contrast was that the Panama Canal has been suffering from drought this year.
