I recently wrote a long blog comparing the main AI tools (the likes of ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot and Gemini), and thought I'd now do the same thing for text-to-image generation tools (ie ones where you type in what you want to see and the AI tool creates a picture showing you this).

Before we go any further, a word of warning: I'm doing this from the point of view of someone who wants to create relevant images for inclusion in blogs, articles and newsletters. I am NOT a graphic artist, nor do I have any interest in spending hours fine-tuning pictures until they are good enough to be published in a glossy magazine. I suspect 90% of users of AI image generation tools fall into the same category as I do, but I just thought I'd mention this at the start!

Here's what the rest of this blog will cover:

Section	What it will cover
The tools I'm comparing	The 5 main image generation tools I've chosen to compare (and some of the main omissions, with why I chose not to include them).
The tests I'll run	The pre-defined prompts that I'll give to each image generation tool, and some thoughts on what I'm trying to achieve for each.
The first test	Asking each tool to create a photo-realistic picture.
The second test	Asking each tool to create a child-like line drawing, with detailed instructions.
The third test	Asking each tool to create a Marvel Comics style picture (this includes uploading a picture in the first place).
Comparing the 5 tools	How the 4 tools compared for cost, speed, ease of use and image quality (original and edited).
Conclusions and recommendations	Based on the results of running the tests, my thoughts on which tool I'll be using most going forward, and why.

To ensure that the tests are as fair as I can make them, I have pre-defined the prompts for each test and used exactly the same one for each image generation tool. At the time of writing, I genuinely have no idea which tool I'll prefer!
