Bulk uploading images to a report server in SSRS Part one of a three-part series of blogs |
---|
In SQL Server Reporting Services, storing images on a report server provides a convenient way to display pictures in a report. Uploading images one-by-one is tedious so this blog shows you one way to upload multiple images at the same time, including how to organise the files into different folders.

In SQL Server Reporting Services, you can display an external picture in a report by providing the URL of the image file.
This table of films displays external images.
It's easiest to do this if the images you want to display are stored on the same report server as the report.
Each image file has been uploaded to a folder on the report server.
You can read this blog to learn how to display images stored on a report server in an SSRS report.
A simple way to upload an image to the report server is to use the Reporting Services web portal.
Navigate to the web portal and click the Upload button to begin choosing files.
In the dialog box which appears, choose the image file you want to upload and click Open to upload it:
You can also double-click a file to upload it.
Once the file has finished uploading, it will be displayed in the web portal:
The file as it appears after uploading.
The big problem with this approach is that you can only upload one file at a time which makes the process incredibly tedious! The rest of this blog explains how you can use Visual Studio to quickly upload multiple image files and even organise them into different folders.
