Open the file in the folder above. Your task is to create a VLOOKUP formula to work out what council tax you will pay (this will feed into the rest of the spreadsheet).
The model is showing we are buying a house worth £297,500 - but how much council tax will we pay on this each year?
Create your lookup table using the following information (these council tax rates are invented, but the principle and the fact that there are 8 bands from A to H is correct):
Price range | Band | Council tax |
---|---|---|
£0-£140k | A | £1,000 |
£140k-£180k | B | £1,200 |
£180k-£220k | C | £1,400 |
£220k-£260k | D | £1,600 |
£260k-£300k | E | £1,800 |
£300k-£400k | F | £2,000 |
£400k-£500k | G | £2,200 |
£500k or more | H | £2,400 |
It's easiest to create a lookup table if you start with the bottom row and work your way upward.
Add formulae to the yellow cells using the VLOOKUP function to show your council tax band and council tax for these house price assumptions.
For this house price you will pay £1,800 a year an band E.
Try changing your house price to make sure that the council tax band and rate are both being calculated correctly.
Save your workbook as With council tax then close it down.
