By default, Excel creates and saves new files in the Excel Workbook format with a .xlsx filename extension.
Saving a file in Excel.
You can change the file type each time you save a file by clicking the current filename extension and choosing a different one.
Click the filename extension and choose a different file type.
If you consistently save your files as a different type, you can change Excel's default file type. To do this, from the ribbon choose File | Options... to open the Excel Options dialog box.
Select the Save page on the left of the dialog box and then choose an option from the Save files in this format drop down list.
Select the default file type you want to use then click OK.
Your new Excel files will now default to the type you've chosen.
New files now use a different type by default.
You can use this same technique in other Microsoft Office applications such as Word and PowerPoint.
