Every time you create a chart in Excel, a chart is created using the default chart style (using whichever method - F11 or ALT+F1 or using the Insert menu).
For most people this will be a 2D vertical column (assuming the default chart hasn't been changed) as shown below:
This vertical 2D column chart will be the default for most users
If you frequently create a 3D area chart, for example, it makes sense to set this as your default chart instead.
To set the default chart, click on any chart to select it and from the ribbon choose Chart Design | Change Chart Type.
Click on Change Chart Type
Choose the main type of chart on the left and then right click on the sub-type of chart at the top:
Choose your new default type of chart
To set your new preferred default chart, click on Set as Default Chart
It is always best to check that it has been set so right click again on this option and you should see a green tick to show that this is now the default chart.
From now on this will be the default chart that is created.
