Power BI Desktop updates for March 2025 Part two of a five-part series of blogs |
---|
These updates were announced in the dying hours of the last day of March, presumably as part of the Fabric Community conference in Las Vega.

For fans of themes (and you should be one of them) you can now create a range of preset styles for particular visual types:
Here we've created 2 preset styles for a column chart: Owly dull and Owly exciting.
While it's a good idea to create themes for Power BI Desktop - and doing so for your organisation will ultimately save huge amounts of time - the learning curve involved is steep!
Before you can add preset styles for particular visuals to a theme, you first need to create the JSON file for one (here's a good way to do this). You can then edit the JSON file generated:
The red box contains a name and settings for your default theme for a column chart; the green boxes contain the details of two custom preset styles.
Here are the preset styles that the above will create for column charts:
Preset style | What it will do |
---|---|
stylePreset | Show the chart legend at the bottom right |
Owly exciting | Show the legend at bottom centre and change the value axis gridline colours (not that exciting, perhaps) |
Owly dull | Change the value axis gridline colours |
What this shows is that while it's easy to understand the principles involved in creating preset styles, getting the syntax right is another thing altogether.
Note that preset styles are part of a theme, so if you change the theme for a report you'll lose the preset styles.
