When we import dates in Power BI, there is a horrifying possibility: the dates are written in a different regional format! Power BI will read these as text which isn't helpful.
In the example below, I'm using Power BI with UK regional settings but someone has thoughtlessly provided me with dates written in the US style:
I'm sure they feel a similar horror at our strange tea drinking ways.
To get Power BI to read these values as dates, click the ABC button to the left of the column header, then select Using Locale...
It's tempting to choose Date but that would cause an error.
From here we can set the Data Type to Date and the Locale to match that of the source data, in this case, English (United States).
This feels somewhat counterintuitive, we want UK style dates not US!
This tells Power BI that the column holds date values written in the US style. Now you can safely assign the Date data type to the column without causing an error.
Those are dates the King would be proud of.
