New features in the April 2023 Power BI update Part one of a three-part series of blogs |
---|
Modern visual tooltips are still officially in preview, but since they're turned on by default we've included them in this update. The update also includes composite models, some new DAX functions and a small change to PowerPoint story styling, but it's the big beasts lined up in preview which are (as always) the real story.
We've been creating our idiosyncratic monthly blogs on Power BI updates since November 2016, and also deliver online and classroom Power BI courses. |
The line between preview features and released ones becomes ever more blurry with this update - pity the poor Wise Owl blogger who has to decide when a new feature officially becomes a feature! Here's what is definitely new this month:
Feature | Notes |
---|---|
Modern visual tooltips | Ok, these are still in preview, but since they've been turned on by default for a while I've decided it's time to bite the bullet and cover them. |
Various other features | This update includes composite models (so you can now include other tables with your DirectQuery reports), the ability to add outline borders to PowerPoint stories and some new - quite specialised - DAX functions. |
However, it's what's in preview which is the real story, including:
Preview feature | Notes |
---|---|
On-object interaction | I blogged last month on how this new feature will change Power BI formatting forever. From the number of bug fixes announced this month to the preview feature, I'd guess it has a month or two to go before it's released into the world, but who knows? |
Field parameters | I've also already blogged on these, since they're turned on by default, but they still remain stubbornly stuck in preview officially. |
Quick measure suggestions | This latest attempt to help users to write DAX is now turned on by default, but only if you're in the US. I will wait until it's turned on in the UK to include it in this update blog. |
Dynamic measures | This new feature will allow you to have different formatting for different numbers, dependent on the value of some DAX measure that Power BI will help you to create. |
The direction of travel is clear - making Power BI easier to use, and trying to remove the need to learn DAX - but power DAX users shouldn't forget about filter and row context quite yet!
